Herbal Remedies for Asthma

Asthma is a type of lung disorder characterized by the dysfunction and weakening of the bronchial tubes. As a result, asthmatic patients are always advised against performing strenuous physical activities, as it can trigger an asthma attack. However, certain asthmas are triggered by allergens like dust, pollen, and other minute particles that may irritate the lungs.

To treat asthma with the use of herbal remedies, the following are suggested:

  • Ephedra sinica for Asthma: This herb has been long used for asthma. It contains ephedrine that allows asthma patients to breathe normally. Ephedra sinica is known in Chinese medicine as ma huang and its role in the development of commercial drugs for asthma has long been established.
  • Licorice root Treatment: Licorice root relieves the inflammation of the breathing passages. This herb contains properties that can eliminate swelling. It can provide an almost instant relief to asthmatic patients. Ask your herbalist as to how you should take licorice root for asthma.
  • Garlic for Asthma: Garlic can also be used for asthma. It helps soothe the throat and provides coughing relief to patients. Just boil enough garlic to make a broth. Take a glass or two a day or whenever coughing is intense. Aside from garlic, onions can also be used as an alternate.
  • Lobelia Remedy for Asthma: Lobelia can help reduce the inflammation of the bronchial tubes. It also soothes the tissues of the lungs so that it won't suffer too much irritation. There are lobelia capsules and tinctures available at herbal health stores today. Take them as indicated or as prescribed by a doctor.
  • Mullein oil Treatment: Mullein oil is another effective herbal remedy for asthma. It can reduce coughing and clear air passages. It also makes sure that the bronchial tubes don't get inflamed much. Mullein oil can also be bought at pharmacies these days.
